Creative Ways to Keep Paws Cool During the Heatwave ​Happy 4th of July!

​While many of us are celebrating today, it is impossible to ignore the extreme heatwave we are experiencing. Here in Baltimore, we have been under a Code Red extreme heat alert with heat index values expected to exceed 110 degrees.

I already have a blog post detailing general excessive heat warnings, but I wanted to do a special holiday edition because this kind of weather requires us to rethink our dogs' daily routines.

​The Silent Danger of Hot Cars: We all know not to leave a dog in a hot car, but the actual numbers are staggering. When it is just 95 degrees outside, the inside of a car can reach 114 degrees in only 10 minutes. After an hour, that temperature can soar to 135 degrees. Worse still, when the heat index is 110 degrees like we have seen locally, a car's interior can reach a catastrophic 160 degrees. Because dogs cool themselves by panting, being trapped in a superheated environment means they can suffer fatal heatstroke in a matter of minutes. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows cracked!

​Know Your Dog’s Threshold: Every dog handles the heat differently, and it is our job as pet parents to know their limits. Take our home team, the Protectors of the Realm, as a perfect example: ​Joy: She does fairly well in the heat. As long as we go out early in the morning and keep the walks shorter than usual, she is happy and able to handle it safely. ​Beefy Seal: He requires a completely different approach. Because of his breed, he has that classic, adorable "pitty block head" with a big, wide face. Even with his big nostrils, the shape of his blocky muzzle makes it much harder for him to pant and breathe efficiently in the heat. Coupled with his other health issues, walking him outdoors in this weather is simply a no-go.

​Safe Outings and Indoor Enrichment: Just because it is too hot for a traditional walk doesn’t mean your dog can't enjoy a fun, brain-stimulating day! Here are some of my favorite ways to keep dogs busy, happy, and well-cared for on extreme weather days:

​The Indoor Adventure Walk: Turn the vehicle on and let the AC run until it is fully cooled down before loading up your pup. Drive to a pet-friendly, air-conditioned store like PetSmart or Lowe's. Give them a quick potty break in the grass outside, and then head indoors for a fantastic, brain-stimulating sniff walk down the aisles! ​

Practice Makes Perfect: Use the indoor time to practice basic commands. Short, 5-minute sessions of sit, stay, and recall are mentally exhausting for dogs in the best way possible. ​"Find It" & Puzzle Games: Hide high-value treats in different areas around the house and teach your dog to use their nose to "find it." You can also break out the puzzle toys to keep their minds engaged. ​

The Snuggle Fest: Depending on your dog's personality, some are perfectly content to just curl up on the couch in the air conditioning for a long snuggle fest with their humans! ​

Not Just for Hot Weather: The best part about these indoor enrichment activities is that they work perfectly for any day when being outside is stressful or unsafe. Whether it's pouring rain, a snowstorm, or a noisy night filled with thunder and 4th of July fireworks, these tips will keep your dog happy and secure. ​
