Caring Through Every Season: Practical Hacks for Dogs (and the Humans We Love)

Whether you are a human or a fur baby, bodies change, life rolls on, and unconditional love simply adapts.
Beefy Seal has entered a new chapter where he is sporting a belly wrap indoors. He has managed ongoing neurological issues for quite a while now, and a few months ago, we also worked our way through cancer treatments—which, thank God, were successful! Most recently, routine blood work revealed new changes with his thyroid and liver.
With all of these physical shifts, he has started having occasional indoor accidents. Sometimes it is triggered by stress. Just like with senior humans, something that wouldn't have phased him at a younger stage of life now causes his stress levels to spike—like laying by the basement door waiting for me while I am downstairs tending to another dog. Other times, it happens without any stress at all, like just last night when he had an accident while fast asleep.
It is never intentional; it is simply a new stage of life.
Between running our pet care business and all the fosters we’ve had over the years, we have accumulated quite an array of wraps, waterproof covers, and supplies that are proving so helpful now as we enter this new stage of life with our boy. But it got me thinking: it would be really helpful for other people who don't already have all of this on hand to have a solid starting point!
So we put together our favorite tried-and-true tips, tricks, and product links below. While it is just a drop in the bucket of what is out there, it gives you an easy place to start—and every single strategy works just as well if you are caring for an aging human at home.
Proactive Caregiver Hacks
1. The Washable Wrap + Human Liner Hack (Plus Disposable Backups!)
Washable Male Belly Bands & Female Diapers: Soft, reusable fabric wraps keep leaks and accidents contained without restricting comfort or movement. They come in a wide array of sizes to fit every body type (see our favorite Washable Male Belly Bands and Washable Female Diapers).
The Caregiver Liner Trick: Instead of washing heavy fabric wraps constantly, take a standard Adhesive Human Incontinence Pad (like extra-coverage Poise pads without wings) and stick it directly inside the washable wrap. When an accident happens, just peel out the soiled liner, toss it, and stick in a fresh one. The outer wrap stays clean, cutting laundry down drastically. (This works identically inside human washable undergarments!)
Disposable Wraps & Diapers for Travel: While washable wraps are wonderful for daily home use, keeping a pack of Disposable Male Belly Wraps or Disposable Female Dog Diapers on hand is a lifesaver for road trips, vet visits, or extra-busy weeks when you need a quick toss-and-go option.
2. The Ultimate Step-by-Step Bed & Furniture Layering Setup
Whether a human or a dog is in the bed, protecting both the mattress and the top covers keeps everyone secure and avoids middle-of-the-night laundry nightmares:
Layer 1: Your mattress.
Layer 2: Your standard mattress protector.
Layer 3: An additional Fitted Waterproof Mattress Protector right over your regular protector before putting your fitted sheet on (doubling up at the base guarantees nothing ever reaches the mattress, and fitted corners keep it locked in place).
Layer 4: Your fitted sheet.
Layer 5: Your top sheet.
Layer 6: Your regular blankets, comforter, or duvet.
Layer 7 (The Top-Layer Shield): For the very top of the bed, you have two great options—and we actually use both as an extra precaution in addition to Beefy wearing his wrap, just to be sure!
The Zippered Option: Put your top blanket or comforter inside a Zippered Waterproof Duvet Protector. They come in multiple sizes (just measure your blanket first!), and because it zippers shut, your comforter stays completely locked in place inside it without sliding around.
The Reversible Throw Option: Lay a Reversible Non-Zippered Waterproof Cover right over the top of the bed—or over your living room and family room couches! We use these on all of our furniture and beds. They come in different sizes (just measure your couch or bed first), and because they are reversible, you can flip them to switch up your color theme while keeping everything underneath completely dry.
3. Dog-Bed, Kennel & Doorway Floor Armor
Zippered Duvet Covers for Dog Beds (The "Crib Size" Secret!): While we have a couple of dog beds that came with built-in waterproof covers, many standard floor and kennel beds act like giant sponges. For those, we use those same Zippered Waterproof Duvet Covers! We use the larger sizes for our biggest floor dog beds, and here is our favorite secret: the crib-size zippered covers fit the dog beds inside our kennels almost perfectly! It is just a tiny bit longer than the bed, which makes it super easy to slip on and zip shut.
Top It for the Diggers: Once the dog bed is zipped inside its waterproof cover, we always toss a regular washable blanket or sheet over it to boot, because dogs love to dig and nest in their blankets! If an accident happens during a nap, you just wash the top blanket and wipe or wash the zippered cover while the inner bed stays completely untouched.
Doorway & Floor Protection Pads: For high-traffic waiting spots—like right in front of the basement door, by water bowls, or on favorite carpet spots—placing down Washable Non-Slip Floor Potty Pads (which grip the floor and go right into the washing machine) or Disposable Leak-Proof Pee Pads protects your floors and carpets from unexpected leaks.
4. The Golden Rule: Check Constantly to Prevent "Diaper Rash"
Protective wraps are only helpful if they are changed immediately when wet.
You would never leave a human baby or an aging adult sitting in a soiled diaper, and the exact same rule applies to dogs. Leaving wet material against their skin causes painful irritation and urine scald (canine diaper rash).
Check As Often As Possible: Don't wait hours to check. Check them continuously throughout the day, the moment you come back from another room (like returning upstairs from the basement), and right after they wake up from a nap. The goal is to catch an accident as soon as it happens so they are never sitting in it.
Wipe Clean & Dry: Keep Fragrance-Free Sensitive Baby Wipes handy to clean their skin at every change (human sensitive baby wipes are gentle, affordable, and work wonderfully!), and make sure the fur and skin are dry before putting a fresh wrap back on.
Use an Enzymatic Laundry Booster: When washing soiled wraps, bedding, or floor pads, adding a splash of Enzymatic In-Wash Laundry Booster alongside your regular detergent breaks down urine proteins and odors completely so fabrics come out truly fresh.
Let the Skin Breathe: Wraps are for indoors only. Whenever your dog heads outside into the yard or goes for a walk, take the wrap off completely so their skin gets plenty of fresh air.
When we look at how briefly our dogs are with us compared to a human lifespan, making these small household adjustments is the easiest way to give back a fraction of the unconditional love they give us every single day.
