As the summer heat settles in, it’s important to keep your pup’s well-being top of mind— especially during outdoor time and walks. Whether you’re heading out for a quick potty break or a play session, here are a few best practices to keep tails wagging and paws safe: Time It Right Try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening, when the pavement is cooler and the sun is less intense.  The Palm Test Place your hand (palm down) on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Hydration is Key Bring water for both you and your pup—even on short walks. Offer frequent water breaks and watch for signs of overheating (excessive panting, slowing down, or confusion).  Keep It Short If it’s hot and unavoidable, stick to brief walks for potty breaks. Save longer adventures for cooler hours or shady spots. Shade is Your Friend Choose grassy areas or tree-covered routes when possible Know the Signs of Heat Stress Be on alert for: Heavy panting Drooling Lethargy

Bright red gums or tongue If you notice any of these, get your pup to a cool place and contact your vet.
